Okay, I am finding out the hard way that character names prove very important. A friend of mine asked me, "Where in the world are you finding names for your characters?" I laughed and told her that the names just appear in my head - Will, Breanna, Cleotyne, Jasmine, Stanley, Leon, Ollie - and I go with that. Other times I thumb through the phone book to use a first name here and a last name there.
No more, not after that conversation! My friend envisioned Stanley as being unattractive and heavy-set; he was the hero in one of my books. She didn't care for the name Leon either - not for a book character. After I pondered more on the name Stanley, the more I kept thinking about the character, Flat Stanley, in Jeff Brown's children books.
In a new work in progress, I have these unofficial names selected for the two main characters: Adrienne and Alex. Now that I am seeing those character names together, I am thinking I may need to change one of them to something else since they both start with A.
No more phone books. No more daydreaming! I've decided to visit www.babynames.com and Character Name Generator at www.be-a-better-writer.com/character-name-generator.html.
Have an opinion? Should I change the name Adrienne or Alex? How do you select character names?http://www.flatstanleybooks.com/
Writing - wonderful, beautiful, blissful, creating words that make meaning, that evoke emotions! Writing words that come from the heart - whether real or imaginary. Creating characters that we grow to love or hate. Creating imagery in our heads during the reading and long after the book is finished, causing us to long for more, to wish there were more to the characters' lives - hoping the book had no end. That's what writing means to me. That's why I write!
