Happiness

What is happiness? That was the question running through my mind just yesterday. I remember being happy the most when I was just a child, running wild and free in the yard while my mom cooked dinner and dad relaxed after work in front of the TV. That was a long, long time ago. But those days as a child were happy ones. I was innocent and carefree. I did not know about mortgages, payments, bills, and such. Life then was good. No, life was great!

As I've grown a whole lot older, I've considered happiness. What is it? What truly makes a person happy?

Many of us spend our whole lives waiting to be happy. We're waiting on someone special to make us happy. We're secretly waiting for Mr. or Mrs. Right to find us, and together we'll ride off into the sunset.
Well, I'm afraid that kind of thinking is the stuff of fiction. It really is.

After all these years, I've made a startling revelation. Though in the back of my head, it is what I'd known all along.

What is it that makes a person happy?

Happiness comes from within. There is no other person on the planet who can make another person happy. Sure, there will be fleeting moments when a person may feel good being with someone special. Everybody needs and deserves someone in his or her life to explore the joys of life with, enjoying vacations, movies, quiet times, etc. We humans need and constantly seek companionship. We need to belong to someone. But what makes people truly happy is looking within ourselves to discover the things that we enjoy doing and occupying our minds with the things that we love. Then it is our task to go out and pursue those things and to chase our dreams. That's what will bring true happiness. That and a close relationship with God.

All in all, I get a sense of tremendous pleasure from writing, and because of that, writing is one of the things that I must pursue. As writers, we can dream and fantasize and create whole new worlds. To me, that brings a sense of accomplishment and happiness.

What makes you happy? And do you agree or disagree with me?
